While there are several homestays available in Sikkim, I would recommend Yangsum Farm in West Sikkim where I had a great experience. Thendup Tashi was a gracious host and provided some memorable experiences like the morning walk to monasteries in the neighborhood, serving breakfast outdoor with a view of the great Mt Kanchenjunga and involving us in the farm activities like milking cows!
The itinerary also included a picnic at a helipad in Pelling, a visit to the famous Pemayangtse, the most important monastery of the Nyingmapa order and Rabdentse ruins, the ancient second capital of Sikkim.
How to reach Sikkim
Sikkim doesn’t have any airports or railway stations. The best way to reach Gangtok is from New Jalpaiguri railway station or Bagdogra airport in West Bengal.

When to visit Sikkim
Apr-May & Oct-mid Nov are the two seasons when Sikkim can be best experienced. The rains after May hide the majestic Himalayan backdrop and hence not worth it. Winters can be extremely cold and so avoidable.
Travel tips for Sikkim
Carry lots of chewing gum and popcorn during the road trips within Sikkim, as the meandering hill roads can be a little nauseating.
