I might be mistaken Madhu but I think Hammocks were invented by Pre Inca Amazonians of South America (around Peru), made from tree barks. They slept on it to avoid snakes and insects. Not too sure of it, but was told to me by a historian cum guide in the Peruvian Amazons. 🙂
